Move anything blocking corners, outlets, toe kicks, appliance panels, and trim. - Use the right tools
Tape measure, notepad, painter’s tape, and your phone camera. A laser measure helps, but it’s not required.
Must-Have Measurements for Cabinet Planning
Start with a rough sketch of the room (it doesn’t need to be pretty). Then capture these:
1) Wall-to-wall dimensions
- Overall length of each wall (measure at floor level)
- Measure again at counter height if the home is older (walls can bow)
- Note bumps, chases, columns, or anything that changes a straight run
2) Ceiling height and soffit notes
- Floor-to-ceiling height in multiple spots
- If soffits exist: height and depth, plus where they start and stop
- Note ceiling drops, beams, sloped ceilings, or bulkheads

3) Window and door locations
For each window and door, record:
- Opening width and height
- Distance from the nearest corner to trim edge
- Height from floor to window sill

- Distance between island and perimeter runs (or planned island area)
- Walkway widths at tight spots
- Door swings (pantry doors, fridge doors, basement doors, etc.)

Even if appliances aren’t purchased yet, note what you plan to use and any model numbers you already know.
Confirm:
- Range/cooktop width (30 vs 36) and slide-in vs freestanding
- Refrigerator width and depth plus door swing (counter-depth changes everything)
- Dishwasher width (typically 24) and handle style
- Microwave location (drawer, built-in, over-range)
- Vent hood size and duct location or where it can realistically go
Pro tip: Take a photo of each appliance area showing nearby outlets, plumbing, and vents. This helps plan panels, fillers, and end conditions.
Notes That Prevent Rework (People Forget These)
These aren’t measurements, but they make quotes and layouts far more accurate:
- Plumbing: sink drain, water lines, gas line (note wall vs floor)
- Electrical: outlets, switches, under-cabinet wiring, dedicated circuits
- Heating/cooling: baseboard heat, floor vents, radiators, mini-split heads
- Flooring plan: keeping it, replacing it, or installing after cabinets
- Pain points: not enough drawers, dead corner space, trash placement, etc.
Photo Checklist (Fastest Way to Level Up Accuracy)
Take:
- Wide shots of each wall straight on
- Photos of each corner at an angle
- Under-sink plumbing close-up
- Outlet and switch clusters
- Ceiling area above cabinets
- Any uneven floors, wall damage, or noticeable out-of-square areas
